Fostering
Foster agreement
Updated on 4 October 2026.
This English version is provided for convenience. In case of any discrepancy, the Portuguese version prevails.
What fostering is
A foster family temporarily takes a sanctuary animal into their home until it is adopted. The animal remains the responsibility of the Animais sem Fronteiras Sanctuary throughout the fostering period.
What the sanctuary provides
- Food, including special food if needed.
- Veterinary care, medication and worming.
- The necessary equipment: bed, lead, collar and bowls.
- Support from the team whenever you need it, by phone or email.
What the family provides
- A safe home, with a routine, walks and affection.
- Following the team's guidance on food, health and behaviour.
- Taking the animal to scheduled vet appointments and to arranged adoption visits.
- Informing the sanctuary immediately in the event of illness, accident, escape or any other problem.
- Not giving away, selling or handing the animal over to anyone else. Adoption is always handled by the sanctuary.
Duration
Fostering normally lasts between 1 and 3 months, until the animal finds a family. If you need to end it sooner, please give us at least one week's notice so that we can arrange the animal's return or another family.
Priority for adoption
If you fall in love with the animal you are fostering, you have priority for adoption, with the same follow-up as any other adoption.
